Three students have been killed and six others hurt after a gunman opened fire inside Oxford High School in Michigan Tuesday, media outlets have reported.

Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said the suspect is a 15-year-old sophomore at the school and was apprehended by police. The student did not resist officers when they arrived, but he has invoked his "right to remain silent" and has asked for an attorney, reported.

Oxford is a small village of 3,400 about 30 miles north of Detroit.

The first of more than 100 calls to 911 came in at 12:51 p.m. to report the shooting. Deputies immediately responded to the scene and took the suspect into custody, but not until he had shot nine people.

One student who spoke with told the news outlet that the school conducts mass shooting training, and that students "knew what to do."

By 2 p.m., students were being released and multiple ambulances and emergency personnel had arrived on the scene.

A parent sitting inside a car told Fox2 that his student had to barricade himself inside a classroom when he heard gunshots inside the school. The student was uninjured.

Fox2 Detroit reported that, as of 3:30 p.m. ET, there were multiple units on the scene including SWAT and an aviation unit. The Sheriff's department reported that the scene is still active.
