We may now know the identity of a government official who has been "leaking" in an effort to discredit President Donald Trump.
Thursday, the Circa news website broke the exclusive story that FBI General Counsel James Baker may be under investigation for leaking classified and sensitive information to the liberal mainstream media. Neither the FBI nor Baker would comment for the report, but ironically, several "anonymous sources" in the Department of Justice told Circa reporter Sara Carter all about it.
Three sources, with knowledge of the investigation, told Circa that Baker is the top suspect in an ongoing leak investigation, but Circa has not been able to confirm the details of what national security information or material was allegedly leaked.
A federal law enforcement official with knowledge of ongoing internal investigations in the bureau told Circa, "the bureau is scouring for leakers and there's been a lot of investigations."
Baker was appointed to his current job by former FBI Director James Comey in 2014. He began his civil service career in the 1990s as a federal prosecutor and quickly worked his way up through the ranks of the Criminal Division. In 1996, he was transferred to the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, from which he became deeply connected with other elements of the Intelligence Community and was generally considered well respected in the community.
The Trump administration has been cracking down on the leaks, and the president has been particularly critical of Attorney General Jeff Sessions for not cracking down harder on leaks within his own organization. The attorney general is expected to announce Department of Justice progress on its leak investigations as early as next week.
